Brief
I was tasked with creating a screen-printed event poster using the quote "Stop Making Sense," a popular film title by the Talking Heads, an iconic American rock band from the late 70s to the early 90s. Their unconventional and alternative music style paved the way for new-wave. My goal was to capture the band's essence while adding my own personal spin to the design.
Creative Strategy
When I first received the project brief, it resonated with me on a personal level. I was going through a rough patch in my life and wanted to visually express how I was feeling. The phrase "Stop Making Sense" is perfect for those moments when you feel like you've gone crazy, whether it's in love or anger. As someone who had never tried screen printing before, I was excited to dive in. I decided to keep the design simple with only two colors, black and orange, to avoid any visual confusion. Plus, orange is such a weird color that it doesn't express any particular emotion - perfect for when you've lost your mind and nothing makes sense!
Outcome
The outcome exceeded my expectations! While screen printing can be tricky and imperfect, I believe it perfectly reflects the band's unconventional music style that works despite any mistakes or gaps in the ink. I'll admit that at first, I made a mistake and ended up with the second poster as the last one in the triptych. But then, It came to me, I decided to center the visuals, creating a flow from left to right; flush-left, centered, and flush-right. Overall, I had a blast creating this Talking Heads poster, and I hope it inspires others to embrace their playful side and make something uniquely their own.
