Brief

Unbegrenzt, which means unlimited in German, is a piece written by Karlheinz Stockhausen, who was considered one of the most important yet controversial composers of the 20th century. The piece is instructed to be played with the certainty that one has an unlimited amount of time and space, leaving it very much up for interpretation. The task at hand was to create a poster for Catherine Christer Hennix's performance of Unbegrenzt at the Musee des Arts Contemporain de Montréal, along with an exclusive vinyl and CD that would be sold at the venue.

Creative Strategy

Unbegrenzt was one of my top songs on Spotify because of how much I listened to it. The process of creating the poster and vinyl took many weeks and went in many different directions. I aimed to portray the infinite time and space, which was represented by the different strokes that give off a very geometric and MC Escher-esque feel. You're not sure where the sounds are coming from, but somehow, you find yourself 30 minutes into the 51 minute piece and have lost track of time. This sound is ideal for studying.

Outcome

I'm happy with the results! I think the design matches well with the sound, and the vinyl represents the music perfectly. It was a challenging process at first, as I didn't believe in myself since I couldn't fully understand the sound. But, I eventually realized that "Unbegrenzt" was not meant to be just enjoyed, but more so experienced. I sat in my room and allowed myself to fully immerse in the sound, and that's when the ideas started flowing in from all directions.
